Sculptural Vessels

This gallery includes images of fine-crafted sculptural vessel forms made from porcelain and stoneware clays, created by combining wheel-thrown and hand-built elements, with sculptural relief patterns.

Early works in this series were made from English porcelain, fired with no exterior glaze for a bone-like white surface. More recent works however are wood and/or soda-fired, developing a rich and varied atmospherically glazed surface.

The sculptural relief gear patterns within these works are intended to suggest post-industrial artifacts and fossils. And while the gear forms may stir thoughts about mechanization, industry, and the churning machine, they are used in juxtaposition with the vessel forms, to also evoke wonder, curiosity, and contemplation on the human mystery and our relationship with nature.
